Since 1953, a Mediterranean keelboat race known as the Giraglia Rolex Cup has been conducted yearly. It is named for the island of the same name. With the assistance of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, it is jointly organized by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Yacht Club of France. The Rolex luxury watch business has sponsored the race every year since 1997, when the present name was chosen. The regatta is a week-long series of races that starts with inshore competition in the St. Tropez Bay, is followed by the main event that travels 243 nautical miles from St. Tropez, France, across the Îles d'Hyères near the island of Giraglia, and ends in Genoa, Italy. The beginning and finishing locations have changed over time, but the race's distance has remained constant. The original route was from San Remo, Italy, through Giraglia, and then on to Toulon, France.
